This section covers how to strategically declutter and pack your belongings for an interstate move. Decluttering before packing not only reduces the overall amount you have to move but also helps prevent stress and overwhelm when settling into your new home.
Approx. Reading Time: 4 min
This phase teaches you how to declutter and pack efficiently for an interstate move so you can reduce stress and avoid last-minute chaos. You’ll learn how to sort your belongings early, work room-by-room, and make quick decisions by dividing items into sell, donate, and throw-away piles. It also covers strategic packing methods, including labeling systems, creating a master list, pacing your packing over several weeks, and preparing an essentials box for move day. By combining thoughtful decluttering with organized packing, you’ll make both the moving process and your first days in your new home much smoother.
Before you begin decluttering, take a moment to think about what you want your next home to feel like and what items truly support that vision. This can help you make more confident decisions as you let go of things you no longer need.
Start decluttering as early as possible, ideally two to three months before the move, and tackle a little at a time. Begin going room-by-room and divide items into three categories: sell, donate, and throw away. Sort quickly and avoid overthinking; make decisions and move forward. Drop off donations and discard trash as you go so the clutter doesn’t pile up again.
When you begin packing, start by creating a master list of what needs to be done and when. Staying organized early will help you avoid rushing and reduce the risk of packing late into the night before your move.
You can stay organized by choosing one or more of these labeling systems:
Number and label each box and keep a master list in a notes app so you know exactly what’s inside each one.
Color-code boxes by room using colored tape or labels, then designate which color belongs to each room in your new home.
Or use both methods together for maximum clarity and efficiency.
Begin packing little by little, during evenings, on weekends, or whenever fits your schedule. You don’t need to pack all at once. Packing a small amount consistently over several weeks or months will make the final week before your move significantly easier.
Pack a move day essentials box (discussed more in Phase 4.2). This may include important documents, jewelry, medications, favorite comfort items, your coffee maker, chargers, and clothing for several days or up to a week depending on your travel time.
Another useful strategy is to declutter and pack at the same time. As you declutter each area, pack what you’re keeping so the room is effectively completed before you move on.
Packing supplies can be sourced from a variety of places.
Ask family, friends, and neighbors for free boxes.
Check with local retailers like grocery stores, liquor stores, and big-box stores, many will give away boxes if requested.
Look for free packing supplies in community or neighborhood Facebook groups.
If you prefer to buy materials, stores like Walmart and U-Haul offer moving box bundles.
Use grocery bags for packing linens and stuffed animals, or large reusable bags from IKEA or Walmart for bulky items.
Consider vacuum-seal bags to compress blankets, bedding, and large plush items to save space.
We’ve also included a Pack by Room Guide PDF from Constellation to help you plan what to pack, what to leave for later, and how to prioritize each area of your home. This guide is meant to serve as a starting point and can be adjusted to best fit your personal needs and space.
