Plan for Emergencies

Always leave room for unexpected expenses by allocating at least 10–15% of your budget to emergencies such as car repairs, unexpected storage needs, or extended lodging.

Declutter Before You Move

Moving fewer items helps reduce overall moving costs, especially during interstate moves (more on decluttering in Phase 2.3).

Save on Packing Materials

Look for free or low-cost ways to gather packing materials:

• Ask friends, family, or neighbors for extra boxes.

• Use towels, blankets, and newspapers to cushion fragile items instead of buying bubble wrap.

• Pack boxes efficiently to reduce the need for additional materials.

Be Strategic With Your Timeline

If you’re hiring movers, consider scheduling your move during the off-season (typically fall and winter), as rates are often lower. Booking early can also reduce costs, waiting too long usually increases the price.

Stick to the Budget

Try to avoid impulse purchases and unnecessary spending. Track your expenses throughout the process so you can identify trends and make adjustments as needed.

Long-Distance Moves

A long-distance move is typically defined as 400 miles or more. As of December 2024, the average cost of a long-distance move is $4,401, but your actual cost will depend on distance, weight, and service type.

After you know when and where you’re moving (and whether you will hire movers or do a DIY move) you can begin estimating your overall moving expenses.

Estimating Costs: DIY Move

If you’re planning a DIY move, compare different rental truck companies to find the best fit. Common costs you should include in your estimate:

• Rental truck fees

• Mileage overage (if applicable)

• Fuel

• Truck insurance

• Packing materials (discussed more in Phase 2.3)

• Equipment rentals (dollies, blankets, straps)

• Food and lodging during travel

• Tolls

• Storage (if needed)

• Professional labor (if you need help lifting heavy items)
