The Lewis & Clark College (L&C) community is committed to social justice and developing a more equitable community for all. Naturally, environmental justice is no exception to those core values. Therefore, our mission as a class is to revise the transportation system already in place so students, staff, and faculty can travel conveniently and comfortably. It goes without saying that we are also emphasizing sustainability and affordability. We understand that having students bring their personal cars to campus isn't eco-friendly, nor is it ideal for our parking lots. We have several great public transportation options available to us, but they're not being used to their full potential due to the lack of education on said modes of transport. This leads to underuse, and an Otterbus route that doesn't serve L&C's goal of connecting students to the greater Portland area. The ability of all Lewis & Clark students to have access to climate-conscious and effective transportation should be a community goal supported and cared for by all. And if not for anything else, parking would become so much easier with this problem fixed! We live in a city, so public transport should be embraced and learned. It's a benefit that many overlook for convenience (car), but in reality, it allows for connection and unity among people. The more public transportation is used and supported, the more access and budget it will be given. We care about our community, our Earth, and want to make a change for the better!

Class Problem Statement
L&C is a node within a tenuously connected, multifaceted local transportation network. Often, traveling to and from our hilly and isolated part of Portland requires the continuous use of individual vehicles. This current dependence on individual vehicles is not only inequitable for those who do not drive, but also conflicts with carbon emission reduction goals for L&C and Portland. Moreover, it creates parking problems and obstructs L&C's hopes for greater integration into the metropolitan area. This semester, we worked as two distinct sections of the same class to design proposals for a comprehensive, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation system at Lewis & Clark College. Both our proposals aim to practically fulfill the transportation needs of our community, wherever they need to go.
Not only is it important to think about the current problems L&C is facing and what needs to be improved, but also to understand past actions. What steps have been taken to improve transportation accessibility, and what goals have already been set? The topic of transportation, its cost-effectiveness and sustainability, has been a project in the works for many years at Lewis & Clark. It is crucial to recognize the work we have done, as well as the change we still want. This consideration allows us to figure out how we can move forward and reach our goals.
