Proposition 3

Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning .

Artifact: EDU 530 Assignment: "Integrating Differentiated Instruction & Understanding by Design: Connecting Content with Kids"

Integrating Differentiated Instruction & Understanding by Design:

Rationale:

This assignment from EDU 530, Educational Assessment and Evaluation, helps meet the indicator of Proposition 3 which reads that:

NBCTs deliver effective instruction. They move fluently through a range of instructional techniques, keeping students motivated, engaged and focused. They know how to engage students to ensure a disciplined learning environment, and how to organize instruction to meet instructional goals. NBCTs know how to assess the progress of individual students as well as the class as a whole. They use multiple methods for measuring student growth and understanding, and they can clearly explain student performance to parents.

In this guide I combine and summarize methods for differentiated instruction and understanding by design as described in texts by leading educators on the topics. It provides easy to follow guidelines for when and how to enhance curriculum with content, product and process that engages all learners. Also included are lesson plan templates that help to create focused lessons that include authentic and relevant activities that directly relate to the lesson objectives.

Reflection:

I was highly motivated to learn the methods for effective assessment taught in EDU 530. Before my formal training in the teacher certification program I had spent two years teaching English in a private language academy in Korea. Here I learned how essential it is to accurately assess the degree to which students understand material on a deeper level. Too often I found myself misled on my students' progress. Now a fulltime teacher in Taiwan I design all lessons using the Understanding by design template, starting with the learning objective and working backwards with focused activities.
