Proposition 1

Artifact: EDU 615 Assignment: "Case Study in Motivation Theory"

Case_Study_Greg_Murphy.docx

Rationale:

This assignment from EDU 615, Motivational Theory and Class Management, helps meet the indicator of Proposition 1 which reads that:

NBCTs are dedicated to making knowledge accessible to all students. They believe all students can learn. They treat students equitably. They recognize the individual differences that distinguish their students from one another and they take account for these differences in their practice. NBCTs understand how students develop and learn. They respect the cultural and family differences students bring to their classroom. They are concerned with their students’ self-concept, their motivation and the effects of learning on peer relationships. NBCTs are also concerned with the development of character and civic responsibility.

In this case study of a 6th grade student at my public school in Taiwan I apply motivational theory to understand the student and to develop solutions that help make lessons more meaningful and engaging. In the process I explore how the most effective motivation, learning for the sake of learning, can be cultivated through a positive learning environment and the framing of assessments. The paper takes into account the student's family which uses negative extrinsic motivation to push her to succeed. I then explore the link this has with risk management and procrastination.

Reflection:

This course was valuable for how it helped me understand the mechanics of procrastination, and ways in which students can be motivated to learn for the sake of mastering material. Interestingly, these very concepts related to my own motivation in completing assignments for this class, and so I learned the value of metacognition, developing a deeper understanding of how I learn, and what it is that both motivates and demotivates me in my academic pursuits. I look forward to helping my students gain a similar self-awareness through lessons that inspire a genuine need to know lesson objectives.
