This is an 8-week, fully online, asynchronous class. There are no required Zoom meetings, which means you will complete your work on your own schedule each week. Even though we are not meeting live, you will still be part of a supportive community of learners through Canvas and the communication app Pronto.
This course is designed to be completed week by week.
You will read and learn two chapters each week.
The course is organized into weekly modules.
A new module opens every Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
Each module closes the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
Assignments are due throughout the week (always check the Canvas due dates).
You will move through the modules together, one week at a time. Modules are not opened all at once so that I can guide your learning, keep us on pace, and strengthen our learning community through shared discussions and activities.
Plan to spend about 6–9 hours per week on this course. Read Study Ratio Recommendations.
This includes reading, watching/listening to course materials, participating in discussions, and completing weekly assignments.
Zoom meetings are not required. However, I strongly encourage you to attend optional “Meet Up” times to connect with me and/or your peers, ask questions, and receive support. Time slots are listed in your Canvas Calendar.
Each module includes a variety of learning activities such as: readings, short videos and listening activities, discussions and collaborative learning, projects and applied communication practice.
For strong time management and success in this course:
Each module opens Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
Review the new module no later than Monday morning.
Start by reading the week’s To-Do List carefully.
Add due dates to your personal calendar and plan your week early.
If you stay on pace each week, this course will feel manageable, meaningful, and engaging.
Your first contribution (initial post) to the weekly discussion boards is due on Thursdays by 11:59 p.m. Your peer responses are due on Sundays by 11:59 p.m.
All other weekly assignments are typically due on Sundays by 11:59 p.m. (unless otherwise noted in Canvas).
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their enrollment by dropping any classes they can no longer participate in. While instructors may withdraw students after the add/drop deadline due to lack of participation in Canvas (up to two weeks of no activity), it is always best for you to communicate with me promptly if you are facing challenges that may affect your participation. In the event of an ongoing medical condition that necessitates specific accommodation, please email me and contact the DSPS office to initiate the accommodation request process.
Please remember that students who remain enrolled in a class beyond the published withdrawal deadline will receive an evaluative letter grade for the course. If you choose to withdraw from the course on or after census, a “W” (Withdrawal) will be recorded on your transcript.
Be active. Each weekly module opens up on Sunday morning at 8am. View the new module no later than Monday morning. Carefully read the week's "To do list" to see the list of activities and assignments. Note the due dates on your calendar, then get started on the week's work.
Don't worry about making mistakes. Many of our activities may be new for you! Don't worry about doing it wrong, just try it out. I'll make mistakes too, and I hope you'll be forgiving as well. We are all human.
Communicate with me. Let me know if something is confusing or you don't understand something. Message me right away if meeting a due date is challenging, and propose an alternative due date. We'll work together so that you can complete everything successfully.
Use the To-Do List and Calendar. The Canvas To-Do List and Calendar will help you track and keep up with your assignments.
In order for our class to develop and thrive in a welcoming and supportive way, we'll follow the ground rules below:
Treat contributions made by each other with respect.
Reach out and help a classmate when you see the need. And ask for help when you need it.
Have patience and a sense of humor with technology. Expect problems (it's technology!).
Keep an open mind. If you're feeling reluctant or anxious, that's ok. Take it one step at a time and look at this as an opportunity to learn something new.
Contribute to interactive activities; share resources and links that we can all learn from.
Respect the diverse opinions and viewpoints of each member of our community. Differences allow us to learn and grow together.
This class welcomes all. Respect in actions and words is expected.
If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please send an email to me using the Canvas Inbox and share your concerns.
It helps to have a laptop or desktop computer. I know that some of you will need to use phones to access some or all of the course, so I try to design my course with that in mind.
If you have any concerns with accessing my course, please let me know.
You will record audio or video. You will need a microphone or webcam on your computer or you may use your smartphone to record.
I suggest downloading the free Canvas Mobile App to stay connected easily as well as the Pronto Mobile App.
