During influenza season, the numbers of admitted patients increase. This causes a surge of patients waiting for inpatient beds in critical care areas. Many hospitals continue to implement single gender room assignments for semi-private rooms. The purpose of this survey is to gather feedback on how current patients perceive the implementation of mixed-gender room assignments for semi-private rooms.

• Members of the healthcare team involved in eligible participants care will distribute questionnaires.
• As primary members of the healthcare team, nurses will play a pivotal role is identifying eligible participants and distributing surveys.
• A script indicating the purpose, intent and motivation of the survey being conducted will be used when eligible participants are identified, to address ethical issues, maintain consistency and how to complete questionnaire.
• Completed questionnaires will be placed in an envelop by respective distributors, and will be collected by the charge nurse or nurse manager.

• Low response rates - partially completed questionnaires, questionnaires completed but not collected, questionnaires not offered to all eligible participants.
• Questionnaire administration - research question may be considered too controversial and may deter participation.
• Problems with wording – questions may be deemed too intrusive or insensitive, potentially perpetuating low response rates or complaints.
• Subconscious reaction – conservative respondents may choose answers in the middle to avoid ends of the scale, or may answer as they perceive is desired by the investigator.
