Preparedness

• Choose a setting with little to no distraction (avoid loud and uncomfortable environments)
• Explain the purpose and format of the interview
• Address terms of confidentiality
• Indicate the amount of time it will take
• Provide contact info
• Ask for permission to record, ensure device is working
• Ask if there are any questions before starting

What questions will you ask?

• Often includes questions about (behaviors, values/opinions, feelings, knowledge, sensory (what has been seen, heard, felt etc.) and background/demographic information

Think about wording and language

• Should be open-ended, as neutral as possible, asked one at a time and worded clearly
• Caution when using "why" (can be judgmental)
• Utilize language that is comprehended by the interviewee
• Encourage responses by using non verbal language (ex: nodding of the head)
• Avoid misleading questions that may have implicit assumptions
• Do not include two questions in one
• Avoid “yes/no” answers
• Ensure questions are not too vague, general or overly invasive

Follow a specific sequence

• Get the respondents involved in the interview as soon as possible.
• Start with the facts prior to warming up to personal matters
  • however do spread factual questions out to keep your participant engaged and interested
• Ask about the present before asking about the past
• Try and finish with allowing respondents to add any further information including their impression of the survey

In the end

• Ensure the recording device functioned properly
• Immediately document any pertinent observations
• Ensure data collected (notes, recording etc.) are stored in a safe locked area
