Heritage in people's achievements: Frances Baard - Northern Cape
The democratic government renamed a district in Kimberley in honour of Frances Baard. This honour was given to her, as she was a very important part of South Africa's history in the battle against the Apartheid regime.
Frances Baard was born in 1909 in Kimberley. She trained as a teacher. She was an anti-apartheid activist. She fought against the unfair treatment of the people of colour in South Africa. She played an important role in the ANC Women's league. She helped to write the Freedom charter in 1955. She led protests and was imprisoned for her work in 1964.
She lived to vote in South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994 and died in 1997.
