Some of my parents are anxious/worried about letting their children spend the night. What can we share to put them at ease?
First, encampment is SUPER fun. Girls will be safe, happy, and well fed. :-) Other specifics:
Encampment Coordinator has undergone lengthy training to plan a safe Encampment
There will be a level 2 First Aider on site the entire time
Camp Highroad has an impeccable safety record, and runs sleep away camps all summer with happy kids
Girls will be sleeping in cabins with bunk beds, with their troop leaders.
My troop has girls who want to attend, but not spend the night. Is this possible?
We highly encourage all girls who attend to spend the night. In our experience, once the girls get into the camp groove, they have so much fun they don't want to leave. They are also pretty tired at the end of the day after all of the exciting activities, so don't have the energy to stress about missing home. Often, parents are more stressed than the girls about being apart. Encampment doesn't happen every year, and it is a truly special experience for the girls who get to attend. However, we don't want to force girls to spend the night if they are truly uncomfortable. If girls must leave early, a parent will need to coordinate this through the attending troop leader.
The troop leader will need to:
Alert the Encampment Coordinator and Health Manager that a scout will be leaving early
Escort the girl to be "checked out" with Encampment Staff and wait until the parent arrives
Girls needing to leave early will still pay the full rate due to Highroad fees.
Can we reserve a cabin to ourselves?
Space is incredibly tight, and all available beds will be used. Each cabin accommodates 14 people. This may mean there are additional adults or girls in your cabin. We will try and limit this as much as possible; but larger troops will need to be split up. Smaller troops should expect to be placed with another troop. If you REALLY need a cabin to yourself, the only way to do this would be to pay in full for 14 registrations. However, this further limits space for girls who want to attend.
Are tagalongs permitted?
No. We are tight on space.
Will our "plus one" adult spend the entire day with our troop?
Your "plus one" adult will be pulled for shifts throughout the day to help with items around camp. Including day of coordination, relieving other volunteer staff for breaks, etc.
Girls in my troop have nut allergies. Is the food served by Camp Highroad safe for them?
Camp Highroad is very sensitive to nut allergies. They do not order anything with nuts in them at all and avoid nuts at all costs. The only thing would be if an item was manufactured in a facility with nuts, and Camp Staff can check labels for that. No food items are ordered with nuts at all. Please make sure to indicate any dietary restrictions on the detailed registration form. You will get this form after deposits are sent in.
Are there food options safe for those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease?
Yes! Camp Highroad can also provide gluten free for celiacs. Please make sure to indicate any gluten allergies on the detailed registration form.
Is my troop required to bring a cookout/campout certified adult?
No. We ask in the registration form if you will bring a cookout/campout certified adult to plan for campfire activities.
