Botanicals Collection

This collection puts flowers and leaves boldly on large platters, little plates and utensil crocks.  The process starts with a thrown or handcrafted piece in the leather hard stage. Colored slips are added and/or underglazes painted on. The patterns of petals and leaves are carefully carved through the clay. Hand painted details are often added prior to firing. Larger pieces: crocks and platter were thrown using brown stoneware clay containing "grog" - pre-fired clay grains, which increase its strength and give depth to the carvings.
