ELA

Learning standards in English Language Arts are organized into five strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. Each strand is one aspect of the processes of communication and is closely connected to the others.

Reading Informational Text

In Grades K-5, the reading of informational text is integrated into the Science, Technology, Engineering curriculum and the Social Studies curriculum in an effort to build students vocabulary and concept knowledge and their understanding of the content being studied.

Reading Foundational Skills

Foundational skills, including phonics, word recognition and fluency, provide the backbone of Newton’s comprehensive reading program designed to develop proficient readers with the capacity to comprehend texts across a range of types and disciplines. In fourth grade, fluency and word work are woven into differentiated group instruction.
