Assess Your Situation
While you may want to take action immediately after a disaster, this is a mistake. Take a step back. Carefully assess your situation. This helps prevent panicking while also helping you size up your situation. Do you need to grab your bugout bag and survival food? Should you shelter in place? If you start running, you might run straight into danger, whether it’s a fire, tornado, or downed power lines. If the streets are flooding and you run to your car first thing, you might find yourself stuck in a vehicle floating along what was a street but is now a river. Take a few minutes to assess your situation. Make sure you know if anyone is hurt, who is safe, and if there is any structural damage around you.
Reach Out to Loved Ones
After assessing your situation, try to contact your loved ones. Hopefully, cell towers are still intact. Having a solar cell phone charger can be invaluable at this step. You won’t have to worry about running out of batteries while calling loved ones. Check and see if they need any help. You can also call to request help from loved ones. Gather your family if possible. Have a plan in place with your family in case cell towers do go down. This means having a meetup place. Be sure your family members know how long to wait before moving on and how to leave a hidden message in case family can’t make it in that time.
Stay Safe
Your next step is getting and staying safe. No matter the disaster, it’s likely to cause some chaos. People may be confused and scared. If your meetup location isn’t your home, you need to decide where to go that’s safe. That means moving fast to your bugout location or sheltering in place. Get to know your location, as you may be there until your home is safe again. You might need your emergency supply food to carry you through the disaster, especially if grocery stores were affected.
Make a Plan
Once you have relative safety, it’s time to make a plan. Do you have access to long-term food and water? Should you move to an area not struck by the disaster? Is leaving worse than staying? Keep improving your position if you stay. Collect as much information as you can. A solar-powered radio can help with this. Keep aware of the situation around you and form a plan based on the information you collect.
