Jewelry

Since Mesopotamia has great wealth, the jewels of Mesopotamia were not confined, only to nobility. Royalty and religious leaders, as was the case in earlier civilization of that time, mostly nobility of Egypt. Jewelry production was not only confined to the central religions of Mesopotamia, but was spread across all territories of that ancient kingdom - from Assyria, to the Babylon cities of Nineveh, Ur and Sumer. They used leaves, branches, twigs, grapes, cones, and spiral objects that were imprinted into the jewelry.

My research on learning about Ancient mesopotamia jewelry was so fun! It's so interesting to learn about how they made jewelry out of the stuff they have around them. It's amazing to learn about where jewelry started and where it has come now. I enjoyed researching Ancient mesopotamia jewelry, and hope I help students who are studying the start of jewelry. (TV)

Pottery

The pottery era mostly only had two types of pottery colors. The colors were black and dark red thick paint, while some have no paint. Some of the earlier pottery were earthenware with incisions on it that make it much more fragile than later pieces.  During the Assyrian Empire in 1813-609 BC, pottery had become very important, and blue glaze was used. Although most pottery was used in ancient Mesopotamia, there are different styles.

My research on this project was so interesting! It's amazing how far pottery has come nowadays. They didnt have alot of colors and still made such pretty pottery! This research has helped me, and I hope it helps further students and people who are studying Ancient mesopotamia pottery. (EH)

Cylinder Seals

Cylinder seals were used as a form of signature writing called cuneiform. Cuneiform could be used for  signing an official document or constitution. Cylinder seals can also be used as a decoration on a container, pottery, or even jewelry. A Cylinder Seal was a clay block imprinted with a design. These were very popular during the fourth millennium B.C.E. Their popularity lasted up until the first millennium B.C.E.

This was the first form of writing ever made which was impressive considering how it was created back in 3200 B.C. Cylinder Seals were used daily in school, or for writing letters, or crafting, and so much more. Once Cylinder Seals lost popularity, Stamp Seals were their replacements. Stamp Seals were similar to the Cylinder Seals but they were round and tiny. They acted as the same thing but they looked different. (TV)

Sciences

Math

Babylon numbers used a true place value system. Where digits in the left column meant they were bigger values. The famous and controversial. Plimpton 322 clay tablet, believed  to date from around 1800 BCE, suggests that the Babylonians may have known the secret of the right angled triangles. As well as providing a medium for the first writing, cuneiform clay tablets were the first recording medium to be in education.

It's crazy to think the math we use now is really old! It was fun to explore how math formed and was created. It's crazy where math started. I hope I can help students studying about where math comes from. (EH)

Astronomy

The ancient greeks thought the earth was centre of the universe. This Idea is called the geocentric model which means earth centred. This belief explained why stars look like they move around the Earth. Ancient astrologers and astronomers became instrumental in establishing the measurements of time for the modern world. The rise of Persia, under Cyrus the Great, saw a change in astronomy. During the region of persian seleucid Empire, babylonians used ‘Goal Year’ test to predict the motions, and elaborate mathematical cosmological phenomena.

I hope I help out people learning about ancient Astronomy. It was so fun to learn more about it. (EH)

Writing

One of the first fully written languages was invented in 3,400 B.C.E. The Sumerians first had the idea of keeping track in 8,000 BC with pictographs and other symbols used to trade goods on clay tablets. When they would trade a sheep for some clothing, the Sumerians would keep track of trade with little tokens made of clay. They lost track of the clay tokens and started using symbols on clay tablets in 3,300 BC. If you wanted to write the word grass, you would draw grass. Soon the Sumerians wrote words that looked like triangles and lines called cuneiform. There were so many different symbols for each ancient city in Mesopotamia. Even today archeologists struggle to read the words written on the tablets.  (SB)

Boats

There was a good system of trade all throughout Mesopotamia. The only struggle was getting across the rivers. The Mesopotamians wanted to somehow get across the rivers. So they made sailboats about 5,000 years ago. The sail was made out of square shaped cloth. The direction of the sails could not be changed, but the people on the boat could row in the direction they wanted to go in. Now we can change the direction of the sail and we don’t have to row the sailboats anymore thanks to motors. Even 5,000 years later the sailboats pretty much stayed the same.  (SB)
