Genoa (Italian, Genova – Genoese, Zena) is a historical port city in northern Italy, the capital of the Liguria region. Genoa has a long history as a rich and powerful trade centre and has the largest medieval city centre in Europe, characterized by a multitude of hidden gems behind cozy alleyways and the magnificent “Palazzi dei Rolli”, a series of noble abodes in the Renaissance and Baroque style, UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The excellent cuisine, the renovated old port, the beautiful sights from the hills overlooking the sea, have made Genoa an enticing place and a popular tourist destination. It’s really hard to list the things to see in Genoa: the Palazzo Ducale, the Doge’s residence since 1339, the Aquarium (one of the biggest in Europe), the Galata Museum of the Sea, the S. Lorenzo Cathedral with its astonishing artworks, the sailors’ neighbourhood of Boccadasse, and much more!
With the pastel-coloured terracotta-roofed houses and lovely seaside villages that you appreciated in the 2021 Disney-Pixar’s “Luca” animation movie, Genoa and its surroundings are a must-see to experience the “quintessential” Italy.
