The subject of this study is the economy of the city or the economy of the municipal economy, i.e. we will consider the city’s economy as an integral part of the spatial economy, and also examine the role of market forces in the development of cities.

In the studied concept, obviously, there are two simpler concepts, namely: “city” and “economy”. It is clear that each individual urban economy directly depends on the location, soil and climate of a given city, on its historical development and social structure, i.e. from the economic and political significance of the city in the country, - in a word, from a number of conditions in which the city is placed, and from its inherent functions. Finally, the economic and political situation of the era has a decisive influence on the urban economy. Therefore, before starting the study of “the economy of the city and urban economy”, it is necessary to solve the general problem of the city, i.e. to analyze in a historical situation all the most important elements of his way of life and life, and above all, to find and formulate a scientific definition of the city, that is, to solve the "definitional" problem.

Already this first and important analysis, without which, in the right opinion of Comrade Rozhkov, “one cannot take a step”, encounters considerable difficulties, since the word “city” (urban settlement, population center, city, sometimes - ancient settlement, town, village) not one of the exact scientific terms. In different eras and in different countries, “Cities” were called phenomena with very different contents and with dissimilar essential features, as a result of which modern urbanists, i.e. city researchers either refuse to resolve the corresponding “definitional problem” at all, or give the city a wide variety of definitions; in science, not a single universally accepted and generally accepted definition of a city has been established, in the real sense of the word.

Consider those of the definitions that exist in the scientific literature, which although they suffer from certain shortcomings, but contain more or less correct ideas. This analysis will allow us to enter into the essence of the problem of interest to us. The points of view with which various scholars approached the definition of a city can be divided into several groups or theories.
