The roaring lion is a black and white photographic portrait of Winston Churchill by Yousuf Karsh in 1941 at the Center block of Parliament Hill in Canada. This photo was taken after the "some chicken, some neck" speech on WW2 to the Canadian House of Commons.

When this photograph was taken, Yousuf had asked Churchill to remove his cigar, and when he refused, Yousuf said "forgive me, sir" while snatching the cigar from his mouth.

After the photo, Churchill stated that "You can even make a roaring lion stand still to be photographed", thus giving the picture its notable name.

This is an image of Barack Obama by Nav Kander. Kander took 52 portraits of Obama's top advisors in a series called "Obama's People". This is his picture of Obama. In all of Kander's portraits he uses lighting to express the feelings of the subjects.

This photo is in black and white, which can often highlight more texture and detail than colored photos normally would. This can also help create a more serious mood.

The catchlight in the subjects eyes can show where the photo is lit from.
