Bioprocess Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, University Sains Malaysia, Malaysia
Dr. Tan Joo Shun is an Associate Professor in the Bioprocess Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia. He obtained his Ph.D. in Bioprocess Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2012 and his Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. Since joining USM in 2015, he has been actively engaged in research and teaching and currently serves as the Laboratory Manager of the Biofermentation Unit at the Analytical Biochemistry Research Centre.
Dr. Tan’s research centers on bioprocess engineering, fermentation technology, and sustainable biomanufacturing, with applications spanning food, agriculture, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and medical biotechnology. He specializes in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as microbial platforms for the production of bioactive compounds.
A key focus of his work is the development of probiotics, postbiotics, and parabiotics, particularly LAB-derived antimicrobial agents such as bacteriocins. His research encompasses fermentation optimization, downstream purification, and evaluation of antimicrobial activity and safety, contributing to the advancement of postbiotics as stable and effective microbial therapeutics.
Dr. Tan is also involved in sustainable bioprocess design, including plant-based fermentation media and scalable, environmentally friendly purification strategies. His research has been recognized through multiple innovation and excellence awards. Through interdisciplinary work integrating microbiology and biochemical engineering, Dr. Tan continues to advance sustainable antimicrobial and functional bioproduct development.
