Professor Masayoshi Tanaka is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering at the Institute of Science Tokyo. He earned his M.Eng. (2005) and Ph.D. (2008) from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. In 2009, he received the Newton International Research Fellowship from the Royal Society (UK) and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Leeds. He later served as an Assistant Professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and joined Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2014, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. Following institutional integration, he continues his academic career at the Institute of Science Tokyo.

Professor Tanaka’s research focuses on bio-nanomaterials and functional biomolecules for nanotechnological and biomedical applications. A key theme of his work is the identification and functional analysis of membrane-deforming and membrane curvature–sensing proteins, which regulate essential cellular processes such as cell division and vesicle formation. His group develops advanced experimental platforms to elucidate the molecular mechanisms governing membrane morphology.

In parallel, Professor Tanaka pursues bio-inspired and environmentally friendly nanomaterial synthesis using peptides that mimic natural biomineralization processes. These strategies enable sustainable fabrication of functional metallic nanoparticles with controlled properties for applications in catalysis, biosensing, and biomedicine.

Professor Tanaka has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and received several prestigious awards, including the Bioindustry Research Award and the Encouragement Award from the Society for Biotechnology, Japan. Through interdisciplinary research spanning chemical engineering, molecular biology, and nanoscience, he continues to advance bio-nanotechnology and sustainable materials science.
