Day 4

The day started cool, with heavy dew saturating the cover, and a mix of sun and clouds  The wind was from the east to start the way but switched more westerly as the afternoon began.

For the 27 dogs still in the running today, the judges set a delayed quad with a double blind and an honour.  The test was iacross two hayfields with a central drainage ditch and a patch of heavier cover in the left bottom corner.  The test had some complexity so handlers had to pay close attention during the briefing and while the test dogs run in order to understand the sequencing.

At the line, a camoflaged panel blind was set up.  The honor dog was sitting waiting on the  outer left side of the blind with the honour handler inside.  The working dog exited the last holding blind and proceeded to the right side of the panel blind.  The working dog was also left on remote and the working dog handler joined one of the judges and the honour dog handler in the panel blind.  When ready the working handler blew a duck call to start the test and their hunting partners called along with them.

The first mark came out of the fencerow at the left edge of the field, L-R landing in taller hay and a pod of decoys at 88 yards.  Then the second bird emerged from behind a tree at the botton of the gully, punching angle back left  at 39 yards.  Gunner 2 fired twice to establish one of the blinds as well.  Then the third bird was thrown from behind a row of round bales to the right, thrown square L-R at 70 yards.

After the third bird was down the working handler was released to send their dog for one bird.  Most dogs took the right hand bird first.  Once the judges were satisfied with the steadiness of the honour dog, it was released.  When the working dog returned with their first bird, a fourth mark was thrown from the close end of the row of bales, angle back R-L.  The gunner in Station 4 shot before throwing to get the dog;

's attention and establish the second blind and then fired a second time at the top of the arc.  

The working dog then retrieved a second mark.  After delivering this bird, the working dog was to pick up Blind 1 which was at 70 yards, up the hill at the base of a goldenrod plant, under the arc of Mark 2.  Once this bird was recovered, the dog needed to pick up the remaining two birds.  For most of the field, this was Mark 2 and Mark 1.  The were some checkdown whistles on Mark 2, and a number of handles on Mark 1.

Once all of the marks were retrieved, the dog ran a second blind up a side hill to the right at 113 yards, under the arc of Mark 2.  This bird was also placed in heavy cover with a stand of goldenrod marking its location.  After delivering the second blind bird, the dog moved to the left side of the panel blind to assume the honour position.

Twenty dogs have been called back for Series 5 which will be a a walkup water triple with diversion, water blind, and honour.  Dog #24 is to start Series 5.

Dogs not called back were: 2, 15, 23, 27, 34, 38, 40.

La journée commença fraîche, avec une forte rosée imprégnant la végétation, et un ciel partagé entre soleil et nuages. Le vent soufflait de l'est en début de journée, puis s'est dirigé vers l'ouest en début d'après-midi.

Pour les 27 chiens encore en lice aujourd'hui, les juges ont mis au point un parcours en quatre, avec un double affût et un chien d'honneur. L'épreuve se déroulait à travers deux champs de foin, séparés par un fossé de drainage central et une zone de végétation plus dense dans le coin inférieur gauche. L'épreuve étant relativement complexe, les maîtres devaient être très attentifs pendant le briefing et pendant le parcours des chiens afin de bien comprendre le déroulement.

Sur la ligne de départ, un affût camouflé était installé. Le chien d'honneur attendait dehors, à gauche de l'affût, avec son maître à l'intérieur. Le chien de travail est sorti de l'affût précédent et s'est dirigé vers la droite de l'affût. Il était également laissé en position de contrôle à distance, et son maître s'est joint à l'un des juges et au maître du chien d'honneur dans l'affût. Lorsque le maître-chien fut prêt, il actionna un appel pour lancer l'épreuve, imité par ses compagnons de chasse.

Le premier canard est apparu derrière la clôture, à gauche du champ, atterrissant de gauche à droite dans du foin plus haut et un groupe de leurres à 80 mètres. Le deuxième canard surgit ensuite de derrière un arbre au fond du ravin, plongeant en angle vers la gauche à 35 mètres. Le tireur n° 2 a tiré deux fois pour marquer l'un des postes. Le troisième canard a ensuite été lancé de derrière une rangée de bottes de paille rondes, à droite, à 64 mètres.

Une fois le troisième canard abattu, le maître-chien a été autorisé à envoyer son chien chercher un canard. La plupart des chiens ont d'abord pris le canard de droite. Lorsque les juges ont été satisfaits de la stabilité du chien d'honneur, celui-ci a été lâché. Au retour du chien avec son premier canard, un quatrième canard a été lancé de l'extrémité de la rangée de bottes de paille, plongeant en angle vers la droite. Le tireur du poste n° 4 a tiré avant de lancer pour alerter le chien. L'attention du chien s'est portée sur le deuxième affût, puis un deuxième coup de feu a été tiré au sommet de la trajectoire.

Le chien a ensuite rapporté un deuxième oiseau marqué. Après avoir ramené cet oiseau, il devait récupérer l'affût n° 1, situé à 70 mètres, en haut de la colline, au pied d'un plant de verge d'or, sous la trajectoire de l'affût n° 2. Une fois cet oiseau rapporté, le chien devait rapporter les deux oiseaux restants. Sur la majeure partie du terrain, il s'agissait des affûts n° 2 et n° 1. L'affût n° 2 comportait quelques coups de sifflet de contrôle, et l'affût n° 1 plusieurs poignées.

Une fois tous les oiseaux rapportés, le chien a couru vers un deuxième affût, en haut d'une colline à droite, à 113 mètres, sous la trajectoire de l'affût n° 2. Cet oiseau était également placé dans un couvert dense, un massif de verge d'or marquant son emplacement. Après avoir ramené le deuxième oiseau à l'affût, le chien s'est déplacé sur le côté gauche de l'affût pour prendre la position d'honneur.

Vingt chiens ont été rappelés pour la saison 5, qui consistera en un triple affût d'eau avec diversion, affût d'eau et position d'honneur. Le chien numéro 24 commencera la saison 5.

Les chiens suivants n'ont pas été rappelés : 2, 15, 23, 27, 34, 38 et 40.
