Kokrobitey was established over 30 years ago by "Auntie" Reneé Neblett, who has transformed the Institute into a visionary incubator for fashion, textile regeneration, and Ghanian art forms that utilize traditional knowledge systems to address sustainability. 

Led by Esi, the weaving studio has table top and floor looms to experiment with a variety of post-consumer waste materials along with natural fibers. 

The batik and dyeing area allows for exploration with traditional batik techniques and natural dyes. 

Master weaver, Mr. Odongo, led a bolga basket workshop to learn this signature Ghanian craft. 

I had the opportunity to learn Kete cloth weaving from Mr. Walter at Kokrobitey along with other artisans in the Agbozume region. 

We visited the largest secondhand clothing market in the world, located in Accra, Ghana. 

A day trip took us to Agbozume in the Volta region of Ghana, home of Ewe Kete cloth weavers. 

We flew to Tamale, which is known for female weavers of Dagbon descent who create chinchini fabric used to make batakari, or smocks. 

I was able to visit several contemporary art galleries in Ghana including Red Clay Studios, SCCA Tamale, dot.ateliers, Gallery 1957, and the Nubuke Foundation.
