Welcome to our chess tournament! These rules are based on the USCF Official Rules of Chess, 7th Edition. For full details, please check the rulebook at Chess Control or Tournament Headquarters.
Playing Area: Only players with ongoing games and tournament officials are allowed in the playing hall during games. Spectators may be permitted in designated areas at the discretion of the Section Chief.
Behavior: Please maintain a quiet environment and show good sportsmanship. No practice games are allowed in the tournament room.
Food and Drinks: Only plain water in sealed containers is allowed in the playing area. Please keep containers off the playing table.
Starting the Game:
Set up your clock correctly (5-second delay on digital clocks).
Black usually chooses the clock, but a delay-capable clock must be used if available.
If your opponent is late, start their clock.
Playing the Game:
Touch-move rule is always in effect. Say "adjust" before straightening pieces.
Keep score of your game unless excused by a TD.
You may briefly leave the room but inform your opponent.
Calling a TD:
To call a TD, stop both clocks and raise your hand.
Make claims immediately - past situations usually can't be considered.
Ending the Game:
Games end with checkmate, stalemate, resignation, or an accepted draw offer.
To win on time, stop both clocks and claim "Flag" when your opponent's time expires.
To offer a draw, make your move, then clearly state your offer.
Always shake hands with your opponent after the game.
After the Game:
Both players should agree on the result and fill out a Results Sheet.
Raise your hand for a TD to confirm before resetting the pieces.
Pairings: Check the colored wall charts for your pairings and report any discrepancies to Tournament Headquarters.
Byes: If you receive a bye, report to the Section TD. You may be assigned a game if an opponent becomes available.
Tie Breaks: Tiebreak systems will determine trophy awards when scores are tied.
Awards: Individual trophies for top 15 players in each section, team trophies for top 10 teams.
Remember, chess is about having fun and improving your skills. Good luck and enjoy the tournament!
