2:51:37 ISEF Rules for Pre-College Science Research Overview
Here is a summary of items covered before recording resumed:
Page 3, ELIGIBILITY/LIMITATIONS, #4: Research can begin as early as Jan 2023 but cannot last more than 12 months.
Page 3, ELIGIBILITY/LIMITATIONS, #7: Projects should involve experimentation/design. Literature reviews, while important, are not appropriate projects for GSEF/ISEF.
Page 3, ELIGIBILITY/LIMITATIONS, #9: A research project may be a part of a larger study performed by professional scientists, but the project presented by the student must be only their own portion of the complete study.
Page 4, APPROVAL AND DOCUMENTATION, #3: Qualified Scientist is required for BSL-2 PHBAs and DEA-controlled substances.
Page 4, APPROVAL AND DOCUMENTATION, #4: Any proposed changes after approval by SRC/IRB must be re-approved by SRC/IRB before experimentation/data collection resumes.
Page 4, CONTINUATION/RESEARCH PROGRESSION OF PROJECTS, #2: When in doubt about whether a project is a continuation, go ahead and complete Form 7. Continuations must be substantive expansions, not just repetition of previous methodology.
Page 5, THE QUALIFIED SCIENTIST: Note qualifications for QS.
Page 6, REVIEW COMMITTEES: No Adult Sponsor/QS/DS/relative may serve on reviewing SRC/IRB.
Page 7: The SRC may override the IRB’s decision; project fails to qualify.
Page 7, REGULATED RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS/RRI REVIEW COMMITTEES: Note definition of RRI.
Page 7, REGULATED RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS/RRI REVIEW COMMITTEES: Independent/private labs and high school labs do not meet definition of RRI, and research is subject to SRC/IRB approval prior to experimentation. However, when in doubt, Form 1C can be completed to address adult supervision and conditions of research.
