SPCY"W"

In the 1970's, women only made up 8% of the population of the STEM workforce. Though in the past fifty years, we have tripled that percent, women still only account for 27% of STEM employees.

We recognize this issue and in 2016, our team created this camp intended to uplift and inspire young women who are interested in going into any field of STEM. In these past 7 years, we have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of amazing students.

Having that said, we have become aware of an issue within our program, thinking, and wording. While we are fully inclusive and our core goal is to empower marginalized (female aligned and non-binary aligned) genders in the field of STEM.

So, while our camp is titled "Summer Physics Camp for Young Women", we acknowledge young students of ALL marginalized genders.

As we move forward, we will continue to be as inclusive as possible as diversity is our future.

The future is to be built with the next generation's ideas and creativity.

Land Acknowledgement

This year, the New Mexico team of SPCYW is held at the New Mexico School of the Arts.

We acknowledge New Mexico School for the Arts resides on the ancestral home of Pueblo People. This region is named Oga P'oegeh in the Tewa language, meaning "white shell water place." We acknowledge the sacred relationship of the Tewa people to water, land, and non-human relations and the long history and culture of Indigenous people on this Earth and in this region. We are committed to preserving those relationships.

We humbly request of you and ourselves an awareness and striving for self-education about this land, its original peoples, and the stories embodied within.
