How to Schedule Your Tax-Aide Appointment

Free tax preparation for Montgomery County residents is available by appointment only. Please review the options and important policies below before scheduling.

⚠️ Important Policies

• 24-Hour Cancellation Rule: If you cannot attend, you must cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance. Failure to do so (or a "No Show") may result in being barred from making future appointments.

• Separate Appointments: For multiple tax years, you must book a separate appointment for each year (e.g., one for 2025 and one for a 2023 amendment)

🗓️ 2026 Tax Preparation Windows

We have established specific timeframes for handling prior-year returns and amendments. Please ensure your appointments align with the schedule below:

Window 1: Full Service (Prior Years + Current Year)

Dates: February 9 – March 15, 2026 During this period, we will prepare:

• Current Year: 2025 Returns & 2025 Amendments

• Prior Years: 2022, 2023, and 2024 Returns or Amendments of returns prepared by AARP Tax-Aide

Window 2: Current Year Only

Dates: March 16 – April 15, 2026 To ensure we can accommodate the high volume of current filings, we shift our focus exclusively to:

• Current Year: 2025 Returns & 2025 Amendments

• Note: We will no longer accept appointments for tax years 2022, 2023, or 2024 after March 15th.

  • Note: Leisure World sites are strictly limited to residents of that community.

Method 2: Call Our Scheduling Office 

Best for those without internet access or for booking Amended Returns.

• Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

• Saturday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

• Note: If the line is closed for the season, voicemail is not available.

Please have the following ready when you call:

1. Full names of all taxpayers.

2. A reliable phone number.

3. An email address (preferred for confirmation, but not required).

🛠️ Amended Tax Returns

Do not self-schedule online for an amended return. We only prepare amended returns that were originally prepared at an AARP Tax-Aide site. To ensure we can help you, please call our Scheduling Office at 240-777-2577. Our staff must ask you several specific questions before we can book this type of appointment.

Inclement Weather Policy for AARP Tax-Aide Sites

To ensure the safety of our taxpayers and volunteers, please review our weather-related closure policy:

Sites at Montgomery County Libraries & Recreation Centers

If Montgomery County Government offices are closed (not the same a public school closures) due to weather, all tax sites located in county Libraries or Recreation Department facilities will also be closed.

• Next Steps: If your site is closed, a volunteer will contact you directly within 48 hours of your scheduled appointment to reschedule your appointment.

Independent & Community Sites

For sites located at Leisure World, Asbury Village, Riderwood Village, Clarksburg HOA Community Center, or Colesville Presbyterian Church, operating hours may vary based on the specific facility's status.

• To Check Status: Please call our update line at 240-777-2577 to confirm if these sites are open during severe weather events.

Appointment Scheduling Office

Regardless of local site closures, the Appointment Scheduling Office will remain open during its normal business hours (M-F, 9 to 4) to assist you.
