This is a take on the classic and widely used Mortise and tenon joint. This particular version has the mortise aspect recessed. The tenon aspect has an additional top and bottom piece that adds strength to the joint.
This joint is used when connecting beams. On one beam a vertical dovetail rail is routed out on the top a notch is carved out so that the attaching board is flush with the other. The second beam has a dovetail carved into it in the shape of a “T”.
This connection is created by routing out two dovetail groves along the width of the boards. The boards are then lined up and pegs which have the corresponding dovetail connection are slid into the grooves locking it in place.
This classic connection is created when a dovetail is cut at the end of the board and a female at the other end. the boards are connected end to end. This connection allows for many options for creating right angle corners.
This concept explored a system of attachments and connections for a “rod” and a “connectors”. This was ultimately an overly complicated system but looked into the use of a rotating and locking system. At this point it was an attempt to decide on how to approach aggregation of the object.
This concept was the next progression in my study of systems. I proceeded to look into a series of of curves that allows for aggregation in a series of directions. The locking system envolves two male ends that overlap using notch system then locked with a center piece.
This was my final concept before delving into my final concept. This system begins with an offset set of male ends which locks in place using a smaller central block. There was side holes that allowed the aggregation in several directions.
This was my Ideal concept for a functional system that can be applied. The question was how can I take a system and use it at several scales to provide multiple options for in-habitation.
This is the connection process. It is simple and straight forward however it allows for more than 1 method.
This layout is intended to be a area to be engaged with as a place to sit and relax as you walk through the paths there is benches to rest on. This is intended to be an exterior structure placed in a park or similar location. The difference is that this structure uses the pieces as large masses as singular pieces.
Using one piece and creating a whole piece then connecting it this becomes a piece that is more experiential combination. The thought process behind this was more of a chaotic idea. The idea comes from a walk through exhibit in which a individual interacts and experiences a space as a diver would from a rebreather.
