Initial precedent studies of simply joinery which inspired the joinery I would develop throughout the semester.
Early Joint sketches
first model to feature curved components. This model used a central dowel for connections which was eliminated in further models.
Introduction of single unit stacking idea. The core dowel was eliminated and the curved component could now lock into itself to triangular form due to notches at its top.
The joint pictured above is repeated and connected until it forms a full loop. The angle is 60 degrees which allows each unit to connect to its neighbor at two points. It also stacks vertically adding additional stability. Pictured is one full circuit. Further iterations would connect these circuits to form larger enclosing spaces.
This takes the full circuit as seen above and uses that to form an even larger conglomerate. At this point it becomes much more visually complex essentially forming six open chimneys. The original sstar shape is now fragmented into many more infinite forms which change depending on the angle at which it's viewed.
Star Loop physical model- 3D printed parts were able to form a partial arc of star loop. Horizontal growth extends as far as one full circle while vertical stacking can be infinite.
In this more humorous conceptualization, "Star Loop" forms a circular enclosure for human gathering. Due to its bizarre shape and bracket-ish construct I wanted to imagine a program which could be reflect its bizarre nature. So program possiblities range from meditation/yoga space to a religious gathering space.
View from inside the structure looking up at the stars. It's hollow walls and open roof amplifying the celestial experience for those viewing inside.
