Scientific activity
My research activity since the beginning focusesd on the relationship between the sensory-motor system and cognition in non-human primates and humans. This research along the years dealt with the way the brain represents space, the visuo-motor processes presiding over reaching-to-grasp actions and action understanding, by means of single neurons recordings in macaque monkeys, and of brain imaging techniques, TMS and behavioral and electrophysiological methods in humans. In more recent years I broadened my research interests to the field of cognitive science, investigating the neurobiological basis of intersubjectivity, empathy, language, theory of mind and aesthetics. I also applied neuroscientific methods to study Autism and Schizophrenia. Since many years I am entertaining fruitful multidisciplinary collaborations with scholars of other disciplines, like philosophy of mind (with Alvin Goldman, Thomas Metzinger and Corrado Sinigaglia), cognitive linguistics (with George Lakoff and Art Glenberg), aesthetics (with David Freedberg, Michele Guerra and Hava Aldouby), psychiatry and psychoanalysis (with Morris Eagle, Paolo Migone, Thomas Fuchs, and Josef Parnas), archeology (with Maurizio Forte) and narratology (with Hannah Wojchiehowski). My major scientific contribution are the co-discovery of mirror neurons and the development of a new model of perception: Embodied Simulation Theory.
My scientific activity is testified by more than 230 scientific publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals and international scientific edited books.

Research topics and activity
----------------------------
I trained and worked with Francesco Casetti and Gianfranco Bettetini in the field of film studies and media studies. My approach refers to semiotic and cultural studies; I focused my interests on the constitution of spectators’ profiles performed by media within different historical and cultural contexts.
I’m currently focusing my activity on two fields of research.
a) A theory and a model of analysis of media experience. This topic represents a general framework for more specific research projects. The research aims to develop a theory and a model for analysing media experiences, considered as living and lived, embodied, situated forms of social experience. The approach starts from a semiotic and cultural studies background, but gathers many hints from phenomenological reflection and takes into account the latest results of cognitive neuroscience. I paid special attention to the experience of the photography, the problem of filmic rhythm and the issue of the “first person” shot in contemporary audio-visual media. See main publications (above) nn. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14.
b) Cinema and hypnosis: a constitutive relationship. This field of research investigates the relationships between cinema and hypnosis, and considers the hypnosis as a key feature of the filmic experience, from its origins. The research is divided into two parts. The first one traces the genesis of the "modern" device of hypnosis, on which is based the metaphorical shift towards the cinematic experience. The second part analyzes the cinematic depictions of hypnosis in film history, with the intention of tracing a hidden story of the meta representation of cinema device into movies. See main publications (above) n. 4, 10, 11, 13

6. LO PIPARO Francesco
FRANCESCO (FRANCO) LO PIPARO
Full Professor of Philosophy of Language at University of Palermo from 1980.
Main research interests
Starting from a mainly logico-mathematical approach to language, his research interests progressively shifted towards the investigation of distinctive features that make verbal language unique, when compared to other communicative systems. In addition to this, he has been investigating the intertwinings between verbal practices and non-linguistic ones.
His focus on theoretical issues is always tighly coupled with close attention to their historical facets.
Main authors: Aristotle, Freud, Wittgenstein.
