What Did They Want? What Did They Get?
Demands of the '60s protests
The Demands of the May 6th 1969 Protest
-20% representation of students on the board of trustees
-open enrollment policy for Bedford-Stuyvesant community
-Higher enrollment rate of minority students
-Include the community outside the gates in activities
-More black and Latin American courses
-Additional black faculty
-negotiation for purchase of homes for the black community
No immediate changes took place following the BSU protest but changes were made in the 1972 protest.
The Demands of the Architecture 1968 Protest and Why it Happened
Why?
-lack of adequate facilities & programs of quality
-infrequent field trips
-few intercollegiate co-op events
-little prep for future employment
-absence of visiting critics program
-called for re
assig
nment of their dean
Outcome:
-The president was sympathetic but refused to fire dean.
