DAFI 36-3009 4.12 Transition Assistance Program
PURPOSE
TAP is congressionally mandated under 10 U.S.C. 1142, 1143, and 1144. It provides transition assistance, information, training, counseling, and services to enhance preparedness in transitioning to civilian life. TAP applies to all Service Members (SM) who have completed their first 180 days or more of continuous active duty.
DoDI1332.25_AFI36-3037 directs that SMs serving 180 continuous days or more on AD (Title 10) must complete the appropriate TAP mandates. Air National Guard Members are only required to complete TAP during their 1st Deployment!
TAP services must be made available to all eligible SMs and their spouses, commencing no later than (NLT) 14-18 months prior to anticipated separation or 24 months prior to anticipated retirement.
TAP must be completed by all personnel separating under a MEB.
Completion of IC and Pre-Sep must occur NLT 365 days prior to separation or retirement as indicated in the personnel system; intent to re-enlist / extend does not negate this requirement.
TAP services culminate with Capstone which SMs should attend no earlier than (NET) 12 months prior and NLT 90 days prior to separation / retirement.
