Our Goal:
To spark and grow STEM interest through being in touch with our community and fostering ideas is a big part of our team's goal. Being a part of the Highland Park Owls means embodying Openness, Wisdom, Leadership and Spirit. Our team strives to openly create and connect with, learn/teach STEM skills from/to, lead younger students in, and ignite passion and excitement towards STEM in our community.

Irving Primary School
In January, we conducted a day-long workshop with our primary school students with the help of our district's STEM coordinator, Ms. Lisa Sacca.
We ran a whole-day event and showcased a physics concept through pulley mechanisms, our robot, and
more. To do this, we created simple fishing rods with the students and an elevator pulley activity to demonstrate how pulleys change the direction of a pulling force.
The kids loved the workshop and want to see our robot in action later this year!
Montessori Children's House
During our 2024-2025 competition season, we visited the Montessori Children's House near our school to introduce our team and fun STEM activities for pre-K students in the community.
We showcased our robot at the start and end of the season, and organized workshops showing programming
Ideas and what goes behind creating a robot.
Bartle STEM Night
At our local elementary school, we co-hosted their annual STEM night, providing young kids an opportunity to build and engineer their own robots using HackPacks by Mark Rober. In addition, they learned the basics of wiring and connectors, and some organic science fun with creating secret messages!

Bartle Elementary School
In 2023, our team hosted "binary bracelets," where students would create a bracelet or piece of jewelry with black and white beads to represent the 1s and 0s in binary code. This taught students how to formulate language using limited resources to help them write what they wanted in binary, but it kept students engaged and willing to know more about coding systems.
Not only that, our team came together to bring something that any student could use to learn about building: LEGO! Lego pieces are an invaluable way to teach students how to be creative about building and designing structures that would be able to work. We helped provide Bartle Elementary with LEGOs in order to teach children how to think about being creative with their designs.

In December, we conducted a day-long with our primary school students with the help of our district's STEM coordinator, Ms. Lisa Sacca.
Our first-graders built bridges to test for their stability and capacity to hold weight, while pre-K and kindergarten students created towers using skills in geometry and triangles.

In February, we conducted a workshop via zoom with our town's primary school students, with the help of our district's STEM coordinator, Ms. Lisa Sacca.
Earlier that week, we packaged and sent ziplock bags of the pasta and mini-marshmallow supply the kids would use to make towers with.
After watching the narration of the picture book, Rosa Revere, Engineer, we drew what our towers would look like, then we built them.
At the end of the meeting, everyone presented their towers through their zoom cameras and told us how their design changed from when they drew a tower to when they built the real thing.
The kids loved the workshop and want to do it again in person next year!
