Technical theatre at Boone consists of 7 crews. They are costumes, hair and makeup, lights, props, publicity, set, and sound. Each crew has 1 to 2 heads or designers and possibly an assistant head. Each crew can have anywhere from 2-8 members. The crews “build” all of the technical aspects of the show after school up until the week before the performances. Sound is comprised of A1 (Sound Designer), A2 (Assistant Sound Head), and a sound crew. Their job varies based on specific roles, but they are in charge of making sure people are heard and all audio aspects go smoothly. They learn a variety of tasks including learning how to mic actors, problem solving with signal flow, and mastering our Allen and Heath console.
Lighting is lead by a lighting designer and followed by a crew. Their overall job is maintaining full coverage and following the lighting plans. Lighting crew is able to learn how run spots, assist with hang and focus, and master all of the lighting instruments Boone has.
Costumes is comprised of a designer, head, and team of those artistic students interested. Costume crew constructs, collects, and organizes what each actor is wearing in a show. Costumes frequently work with other adults.This can be through rentals or department moms helping out. Our costumes are conveniently organized in an airtable. Hair and Makeup is a two part team that works on making the actors look great. The work alongside with costumes in completing the right look. They design, run tests, and aid in helping the actors. Hair and Makeup often makes tutorials to teach actors and is always there to assist backstage during tech and full dress rehearsals.
Set is in charge of the construction of the setting in the show. This is let by a set designer and master carpenter but takes on able hands who want to build. Shop is a great introductory area for technicians who want to begin to get involved.They are in charge of following build plans, organizing load in and out, and painting. Shop hours are most days after school in the weeks leading up to the show. You can always check BAND to check shop hour status.
Run crew is a group of people able to help with anything needed backstage. They are used primarily for tech week and performances in ensuring the show moves fluidly. They have an assortment of tasks, including executing deck cues and aiding in set transitions. Run crew frequently includes members of other crews, as we will pull people from their respective areas to specialize. Involvement in run crew are for those technicians who can move swiftly, face any obstacle with ease, and listen to stage management.
Props is made up of a smaller team who selects any item the actor works with within a show. These are collected through our props storage, purchased, or hand made. Publicity is our marketing and media design team. Under their head, pubs makes our logo, poster, and program, and shirt design. They also assist in digital advertisements like social media posting and the physical distribution of posters and yard signs. All of our publicity parts should be completed by this team of organized and artistic individuals.
Stage management is the glue of any production. This team should execute the director's vision, facilitate all levels of communication, and run oversight for all the technical elements.
