Complex pictorial information can be represented and retrieved from memory as mental visual images. Functional brain imaging studies have shown that visual perception and visual imagery share common neural substrates. The type of memory (short- or long-term) that mediates the generation of mental images, however, has not been addressed previously. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neural correlates underlying imagery generated from short- and long-term memory (STM and LTM). We used famous faces to localize the visual response during perception and to compare the responses during visual imagery generated from STM (subjects memorized specific pictures of celebrities before the imagery task) and imagery from LTM (subjects imagined famous faces without seeing specific pictures during the experimental session). We found that visual perception of famous faces activated the inferior occipital gyri, lateral fusiform gyri, the superior temporal sulcus, and the amygdala. Small subsets of these face-selective regions were activated during imagery. Additionally, visual imagery of famous faces activated a network of regions composed of bilateral calcarine, hippocampus, precuneus, intraparietal sulcus (IPS), and the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). In all these regions, imagery generated from STM evoked more activation than imagery from LTM. Regardless of memory type, focusing attention on features of the imagined faces (e.g., eyes, lips, or nose) resulted in increased activation in the right IPS and right IFG. Our results suggest differential effects of memory and attention during the generation and maintenance of mental images of faces.

Semantic dementia is a focal clinical syndrome, resulting from degeneration of the temporal lobes and characterized by progressive loss of conceptual knowledge about the world. Because of the highly circumscribed nature of the disorder it is a natural model for improving understanding of how semantic information is cerebrally represented. There is currently a lack of consensus. One view proposes the existence of modality specific meaning systems, in which visual and verbal information are stored separately. An opposing view assumes that information is represented by a unitary, amodal semantic system. The present study explores these alternatives in an examination of famous face and name knowledge in 15 patients with semantic dementia. The study of face recognition in patients with an established semantic disorder also permits an examination of the relationship between semantic dementia and the focal clinical syndrome of progressive prosopagnosia. The semantic dementia patients were profoundly impaired on both face and name identification and familiarity judgement tasks compared with amnesic patients with Alzheimer's disease and healthy controls. However, whereas the two reference groups performed better for names than faces, the semantic group showed the opposite pattern. This overall profile masked individual differences: semantic dementia patients with predominant left temporal lobe atrophy showed better recognition of names than faces, whereas patients with right temporal predominance showed the reverse pattern. Relative superiority for names or faces was mirrored by corresponding superiority for words or pictures on a standard semantic test. We interpret the findings as inconsistent with a unitary, amodal model of semantic memory. However, the data are not wholly compatible with a strict multiple system account. The data favour a model of semantic memory comprising a single interconnected network, with dedicated brain regions representing modality specific information. The data emphasize the importance of the anterior, inferolateral parts of the left temporal lobe for the representation of names and the corresponding parts of the right temporal lobe for faces. Dissociations between face and name knowledge provide a challenge for existing models of face processing. Moreover, they lead us to argue that the focal syndrome of progressive prosopagnosia is one of the clinical presentations of semantic dementia and not a separate clinical entity.

So, what are the PEPs? The PEPs are Specially Protected Holdings (SPHs) of accessioned military and civilian personnel files of prominent individuals who served in the military or Federal Government. They warrant special protection due to their status, what they did while serving, or as a result of their service.

What makes a record eligible for the Specially Protected Holdings status? According to the National Archives and Records Administration Directive 1572, supplement 2, Specially Protected Holdings are defined as:

Unclassified holdings to which extra physical, intellectual and access controls are assigned because they bear exceptional intrinsic or monetary value, and are therefore subject to heightened risk of theft or vandalism.

In the case of the National Archives at St. Louis, the PEP collection can include nationally recognized celebrities, officials who served in top positions within the Armed Forces, highly decorated military personnel, innovators and pioneers, infamous characters, and even individuals associated with important cultural events or movements.

As NARA moved into the digital age and began scanning many of its records, the PEP OMPF collection became an excellent candidate for digitization. OMPFs from famous figures are requested at a higher volume than other OMPF records, and since each record can be scanned and made into a high quality copy, it made sense to protect these special holdings and digitize many of them. A few hundred PEP records have been scanned since the mid-2000s, with more to be added to that list as records are treated and requested.

Digitizing the collection is just the first step in providing greater accessibility to these special records. The next chapter in the PEP story is happening right now, and it involves adding these high profile military personnel files to the National Archives Catalog.

While shooting the Seattle segment of his 2014 HBO musical documentary series "Sonic Highways," Grohl ran into Mark Pickerel, the drummer of the Screaming Trees, at the Sub Pop Airport Store in a serendipitous meeting. They filmed an impromptu segment about the Seattle sound and grunge, which you can watch at 51 minutes into the episode.
