After being gifted the beautiful Pākohe taonga from NMKOTW, I went on a hīkoi to find out more about the local history of this beautiful argillite.

Just some 400m vertical metres up the Maitai Valley is a very cool place to visit 'The Rush Pool and Old Quarry Site'.
Well worth this walk up. Some amazing scenery and local history. Could be a possible day trip for the older tamariki.
Nelson City Council:
"Tohu whenua is a collection of stories from our local kaumātua on place names and landmarks within the Whakatū region.
It is hoped the series will support our community to build their knowledge of place names within Whakatū, and also to promote the use of Te Reo Māori and correct pronunciation.
We wish to thank our kaumātua Jane du Feu, Barney Thomas and the late Kereopa Ratapu who enabled these resources to be available for our community."
