VASD Seal of Biliteracy
VASD Seal of Biliteracy
Our local and global communities are linguistically and culturally diverse. Students are preparing to live, work, collaborate, and compete in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. Knowing how to use two or more languages and to interact effectively and respectfully with people across cultures increases opportunities for success.
The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy (Seal) is awarded to graduating high school students in school districts with a Department of Public Instruction (DPI)-approved program. The Verona Area School District's Seal of Biliteracy program received this approval in April 2017.
The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who have demonstrated advanced achievement in bilingualism, biliteracy, and sociocultural competence in two or more languages. Students are encouraged to begin documenting their work toward the Seal of Biliteracy as early as their freshman year; however, the Seal of Biliteracy is only awarded to seniors each school year.
Why should students pursue a Seal of Biliteracy?
As our world becomes more and more connected, the need for a multilingual population is greater than ever before. Multilingualism can have a profound impact on students’ personal, academic, and professional lives.
The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students' home languages as an academic honor and not a barrier to academic success.
Learning more than one language strengthens individuals' cognitive skills; they may have an easier time making decisions and focusing on tasks.
Being bilingual and biliterate helps individuals as they develop meaningful relationships, create cross-cultural ties within the community, and seek to understand varying cultural perspectives.
Multilingual individuals have useful skills that stand out when applying to college, for scholarships, or to obtain a job.
Graduating seniors who earn a Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy may use it to show to institutions of higher education and potential employers that they have demonstrated advanced achievement in bilingualism, biliteracy, and sociocultural competence in two or more languages.
Deadline to apply for Seal of Biliteracy is October 31, 2025.
