FTHS Community Service

Philosophy regarding Community Service

We strongly believe in Community Service at Foothill Technology High School. Giving back to and improving the community which provides us the opportunity for excellence in education is the cornerstone of our Community Service program. Students are encouraged to complete and submit hours for Community Service, as they may qualify for scholarship opportunities and/or use their Community Service experiences on college admission applications. Students are responsible for securing their own Community Service placement(s). This experience is similar to that of finding a job - a situation students will face throughout life. An approved list of organizations is linked below on this webpage. Students may also ask friends and relatives about community service opportunities and search the Internet to find a suitable, local, non-profit organizations at which to volunteer.

We recommend a minimum of three different community service activities over the four years of high school.

Community Service Update:

A message from our (former) school Principal, Mr. Russell Gibbs (October 15, 2021):

Good Afternoon Foothill Families,

I want to keep you informed of some very recent changes that we have made to our student community service participation. In pre-COVID years, student community service was advertised as a requirement to participate in graduation. This is no longer the case. All students who have met the graduation requirements of VUSD can participate in graduation with or without community service hours. However, Foothill Technology has a long tradition of students serving the community in many aspects, and we plan on continuing that tradition.  Performing community service is not only beneficial to the community and to the students, but it is often required for (or strongly encouraged on) college, scholarship, internship, and job applications.

We will continue to offer community service recognition and awards at the Senior Awards Rally, and students will still be rewarded with a community service pin that they may wear at graduation. We are still offering the same awards categories and recognition that we have always had, and from here on out, all award categories will be the same for all students, regardless of the pandemic and of their years at Foothill. "

The deadline for seniors in the class of 2025 to submit hours in order to earn community service awards is Friday March 21st, 2025 by 3pm (the end of 3rd quarter).
