Looking for a new series to fall into? A world with magic, mystery, love, heists, diverse characters, and characters defying the odds? I’ve got the perfect fictional world for you, The Grishaverse! In The Grishaverse books, by Leigh Bardugo, there is the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows duology, and the King of Scars duology.
In Shadow and Bone, Alina Starkov, an orphaned cartographer-in-training, crosses the Shadow Fold, swarming with Volcra, for the first time. Her regiment is attacked by the vicious Volcra, and she defends them with a power no one knew she possessed. Now that they find she has some magical power, she is sent to be trained with the Grisha, “Soldiers of the Second Army. Masters of the Small Science.” While she is introduced to royalty, riches, and training, she can’t help to think about her lifelong best friend that she was separated from, Malyen Oretsev, and the mysterious Darkling.
Throughout this trilogy, powers will be tested, love will be strengthened, and lots of new fictitious words will be learned. Even if you don’t completely love Shadow and Bone, I highly recommend that you finish the trilogy so you can read Six of Crows. This duology is a fabulous adventure with six misfit crooks who go on one impossible (as Nikolai likes to say, not impossible, just improbable) heist. Along the way, you will fall for all of the Crows and get to see and understand how well they all complement each other as one of my favorite casts of characters.
Will they survive? If so, what comes after that? Well, if you survive that too, you may consider reading King of Scars following one of the characters from way back in Shadow and Bone. If you aren’t sold yet: there’s a show on Netflix that you can watch once you read the books and the books all have maps in them! The covers for all of the books are gorgeous too, but, of course, don’t judge a book by its cover!
