Emotional Learning is at the forefront of our School Counseling Mission. According to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
CASEL's widely used framework identifies five core competencies that guides all stakeholders who are involved in supporting the whole child.
Every Student. Every Day
Self-awareness: Know your strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”
Self-management: Effectively manage stress, control impulses, and motivate yourself to set and achieve goals.
Social awareness: Understand the perspectives of others and empathize with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Relationship skills: Communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed.
Responsible decision-making: Make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety, and social norms.
Virginia Beach City Public Schools Elementary School Counseling Program mission:
To partner with parents, community, faculty and staff to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, personal/social development of all students thus preparing them with the knowledge and skills to be productive members of society.
What Do School Counselors Do?
We are here to help you and your students! Here are some ways we can offer support:
Individual Counseling: By teacher, parent or student self-referral, we work with students on anything impeding the learning process.
Small Group Counseling: Also by referral, "Lunch Bunches" are a means of offering peer support and social skills training.
Classroom Life Skills Lessons: Monthly and by teacher request, we conduct lessons on citizenship and prosocial behaviors. We use the Principles of American Citizenship to guide our monthly themes.
Consultation: We work with teachers and parents to understand and meet each individual students' needs.
Coordination: We offer assistance in making use of community resources and referrals to outside agencies.
Advocacy: We strive to support the rights of each individual child.
Parent/Teacher Inservices: We offer presentations on topics of common interest or concern by request.
Crisis Management: We offer support during times of trauma affecting individual students or the entire school community.
