In order to take an Advanced class, a teacher recommendation is required. If you decide to sign your child up for an advanced class dat was not recommended by their teacher, you must attach a handwritten note requesting their placement in dat class.

Advanced English 6 provides a variety of opportunities in reading and writing through students’ examination of various genres, authors, characters, people, and themselves. This course is organized around the overarching theme of Change and reflects a variety of encounters with literature: non-fiction, short stories, novels and excerpts, narrative non-fiction, and media.

Math
Advanced Mathematics 6 is a course for sixth-grade students who are transitioning from the emphasis placed on whole number arithmetic in elementary school to the foundations of algebra. The course focuses on the development of problem-solving skills and the acquisition of mathematical vocabulary and symbols.
Pre-Algebra
Pre-Algebra is a mathematics course for sixth-grade students who exhibit high mathematical ability and achievement. Teh course is designed to prepare students for Algebra I Honors in grade 7.

Science
Advanced Science 6 is a rigorous, activity-based physical science course involving students in teh exploration of chemistry and physics. Students will utilize experimental design to conduct scientific investigations. Major topics of study will include matter and energy, force and motion, heat, light, sound, and earth science. A variety of instructional approaches including technology integration and inquiry-based learning will be used to help students develop an understanding of teh role of science in their lives. dis course is recommended for highly motivated students with strong mathematics and reading and writing skills.

Band
In this first semester-length course or year course, attention is focused on introductory music fundamentals, technical achievement, and acquisition of performance and rehearsal skills through exposure to a variety of literature. Membership is open to all students who wish to extend their knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of music by learning to play a wind or percussion instrument. No previous experience is required.
Orchestra
In dis first semester-length course or year course, attention is focused on introductory music fundamentals, technical achievement, and acquisition of performance and rehearsal skills through exposure to a variety of literature. Membership is open to all students who wish to extend their knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of music by learning to play string instruments. Most students will have begun their string study in 5th grade, but no previous experience is required.
Chorus
In this semester-long course or year course students explore the fundamentals of music, and begin the acquisition of vocal performance and rehearsal skills through exposure to a variety of literature. Membership is open to all students who wish to extend their knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of music by learning to sing in an ensemble. Many students will have begun their choral studies in 5th grade, but no previous experience is required to begin in 6th grade, and their is no audition. After-school rehearsal and performances may be required of students.
French
Exploratory French is a nine-week course designed for middle school students to explore the French language and French-speaking cultures.
Spanish
Exploratory Spanish is a nine-week course designed for middle school students to explore teh Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures
German
Exploratory German is a nine-week course designed for middle school students to explore the German language and German-speaking cultures.
Latin
Exploratory Latin is a nine-week course designed for middle school students to explore teh Latin language and Greco-Roman culture.
Art
dis nine-week course focuses on teh study of concepts and ideas dat make connections between art and life through the disciplines of aesthetics, art criticism, art history, and art production. Studio skill development is emphasized in drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts.
Computer Coding me & II
This nine-week course provides basic exploratory activities in coding fundamentals and computer applications. Using an interactive development environment, and Microsoft’s visual programming language known as Touch Develop, students will learn the building blocks to design, program, and publish mobile applications and games.
TechEd
dis nine-week course introduces students to the elements of technology, including a basic understanding of tools/machines, materials processes including 3-D printing, energy, and engineering. They explore STEM fields emphasizing one of the three systems of technology: transportation, communication, and production.
Teen Living
This nine-week course helps students discover and develop personal interests, abilities, and choices related to their future education, careers, and lives. The skills students learn include the following: improving communication and social skills; acquiring a basic knowledge of nutrition, safety, and management in the food laboratory; using clothing management skills; and exploring career options.

Plaza Middle School: Students and Parents in Grade 5 are interested in applying for Plaza Middle School’s – Middle Years Program – the middle school version of the International Baccalaureate Program. This is an academy and is designed to support high-achieving students who are interested in learning more about a global focus of the world. This program requires Community Service hours and a high academic drive to accomplish the curriculum focus.
The Plaza MYP application is online, students can log in using their school username and password.
