Immersive Experiences

St. George’s University Summer Leadership Academy

Students enrolled in the Health Sciences Academy program at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach have the opportunity to attend a summer enrichment program in Grenada in the West Indies. St. George’s University offers a Med/Vet Summer Academy program for students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and veterinary medicine. Drawing upon SGU’s global expertise, CEPH-accredited Public Health program, and medical MBA program, students are introduced to international health care systems, global public health issues, and how the concept of “One Health, One Medicine” affects health care delivery throughout the world. The 10-day pre-medical and pre-veterinary course combines didactic lectures, small-group problem solving sessions, practical lab work in state-of-the art facilities, as well as hands-on training through simulated and real-life situations.

GPSA for Health is a hands-on, academic, service-learning program for high school students, and works in educational collaboration with Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. Participants provide hands-on help, tackling real world problems with the environment and healthcare. GPSA for Health’s Xela program is an intensive experience for students and with a passion for career paths such as medical doctor (MD), nurse (RN, LPN), pharmacist, biomedical engineer (BME), dentist or other health occupations. For their clinical service, students are divided into teams led by trained college graduates (premeds from Duke, Johns Hopkins or similar universities) or faculty. Students facilitate several medical interventions and screenings (such as measuring infant height and weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, heart rate, etc.).
