Testing for 5th Graders

PLEASE NOTE: The process for 5th graders is different than 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders.

Specific dates for testing can be found here.

Note: IApplication for identification and Old Donation School is the same application. To apply for ODS, you must check off the ODS box. Students who apply for identification and ODS but are not accepted at ODS will automatically be enrolled in cluster program at the local school.

Additional information can be found at VBCPS's gifted site.

Step 1: Screening All 5th graders are screened for gifted. Students take the NNAT3 ability test.

Classroom teachers may not discuss the child's scores with you.  If you have specific questions about your child's scores, please contact the Gifted Testing Office at 263-6870.

All students take the NNAT even if they are already identified. It will not change a student's identification if they are already identified; however, the score will be considered if they apply to Old Donation School.

Step 2: Application:

Students who score in the 90th percentile are recommended for further gifted testing.

Parents and teachers may still recommend a child even if they scored below 90th percentile.

Applications must be completed to continue with the process. Applications can be found at http://giftedapplication.vbcps.com.The login is your child's Chromebook login information.

Please  check the due dates on the main testing page.  There is a video about how to complete the application.(Video in English, Video in Spanish)

Step 3: The Gifted Resource Teacher will complete their sections of the application. All applications will have a portion filled out by the classroom teacher on gifted characteristics they observe in the classroom. The student will also be interviewed by the GRT. You don't need to do anything for this step. The GRT will ensure that the teacher completes his/her part by their deadline.

Step 4: Further Testing. Students will take an additional ability test called the CogAT. After the application date, the GRT will email you with the testing date. The only preparation we recommend is a good night's sleep and nutritious breakfast.

Step 5: Identification: Identification decisions are made by the Gifted Identification and Placement Committee. The committee looks at the entire application to determine identification. You will receive an e-mail informing you of the committee's decision.

5th grade identification decisions are typically emailed in mid March.

Step 5: Old Donation School Placement: If your child was identified during step 4, his or her application will go to the Old Donation School placement committee.  If he or she is not accepted at ODS, he or she will automatically be placed in the cluster program at Glenwood Elementary.
