First Grade Testing

PLEASE NOTE: The process for 1st grade is different than other grades.

Specific dates for testing can be found here.

Step 1: Screening: All 1st are screened for gifted testing in the fall.  Screening is the first step towards gifted identification. The students take two tests: The NNAT and the CogAT.

You will be able to see your child's scores on ParentVue in the 2nd week of January. Classroom teachers may not discuss the child's scores with you.  If you have specific questions about your child's scores, please contact the Gifted Testing Office at 263-6870.

Step 2: Application:

Students who score in the 90th percentile or higher on any component of the tests are automatically referred for gifted. An application will be opened on the child and the teacher will complete a referral on the child. If you receive notice that your child scored at the 90th percentile and you don't want to have your child, you will need to complete an opt-out form.

If your child does not score at the 90th percentile and you would still like to complete the application, you must fill out an application. Applications can be found at http://giftedapplication.vbcps.com. If you would like your child to also apply to Old Donation School, be sure to check the ODS box on the application.

The login is your child's Chromebook login information.

Please check the due dates on the main testing page.  There is a video about how to complete the application.(Video in English, Video in Spanish)

Step 3: The Gifted Resource Teacher will complete their sections of the application. All applications will have a portion filled out by the classroom teacher on gifted characteristics they observe in the classroom. You don't need to do anything for this step. The GRT will ensure that the teacher completes his/her part by their deadline.

Step 4: Identification: Identification decisions are made by the Gifted Identification and Placement Committee. The committee looks at the entire application to determine identification. You will receive an e-mail informing you of the committee's decision.

1st grade-Letters are emailed approximately the 2nd week of May.

Step 5: Old Donation School Placement: If your child was identified during step 4, his or her application will go to the Old Donation School placement committee.  If he or she is not accepted at ODS, he or she will automatically be placed in the cluster program at Glenwood Elementary.
