Over the course of the current project, we’ve collected a wide range of suggested actions and strategies for the College to consider. A snapshot of some of the suggested actions and strategies can be found below.
We invited members of our community to participate in both in-person workshops and open forums, creating multiple opportunities for meaningful dialogue and shared reflection. In addition, we offered a brief survey to gather broader input and ensure that a wide range of voices could contribute to the conversation and help shape our planning process.
Ensure adequate compensation for faculty and all employees
Maintain financial aid to keep pace with peers
Mitigate rising cost of higher education
Strive for regional diversification of student body
Expand continuing education for alums and the public, in person and/or remotely
Develop Masters programs and a pre-med post-baccalaureate program
Address the challenges and opportunities of AI through novel approaches across disciplines that can set a standard for higher education
Explore new educational model (e.g., adding day students; adding a three-year BA track)
Refine communications about value and uniqueness
Work with community colleges to create AB/BA pathway to address affordability
Enhance marketing, messaging, and storytelling about liberal arts
Continue to foster planned giving
Refurbish residential houses, including common rooms
Be at the forefront of higher education, distinguished as fostering lives of consequence
Expend resources on improving existing buildings/assets instead of building new
Improve staffing and space for mental and physical health services
Improve affordability and availability of emergency funds
Expand pre-professional prep to add to curriculum
Invest in technology, Wi-Fi, and Vassar Innovation and Entrepeneurship
Have a no-meeting day
Update houses with recreation and emergency counseling spaces
Communicate better about Engaged Pluralism and balanced perspective
Add funding for student programming
More full-pay international students; help them with career planning
Free tuition below certain income
Meet locals more and welcome to campus; make bike friendly; better signage
Build affordable housing, and support locally owned restaurants
Elevate the Preserve and campus Arboretum as unique spaces for all
Communicate value of higher education more effectively; more real-world skills in curriculum
