Audio is a major factor in the online learning experience whether through asynchronous video creation or synchronous video conferencing. Below are some strategies to assist:
Choose a bigger room with sound buffering materials (carpet and/or soft furniture) to reduce echo. Small rooms will work, though.
Sit quietly in the room and try to listen to any noise you hear. Microphones love constant noises like fans or loud air vents, high pitched repetitive beeping, squeaks, rattles, or howling. Rectify as many issues as possible. Keep in mind that temporary noises are just fine.
In a synchronous environment it may be kids arguing, dogs barking, trains passing close to the house, etc. Just excuse the noise, mute your microphone and either take care of it or wait for it to pass. In an asynchronous setting, re-recording may be your best option.
To reduce audio feedback or echo from the computer, consider using headphones or an external microphone. Apple earbuds or similar will work just fine. You can also get larger over the ear headphones on Amazon for under $25.
Remind attendees to online sessions to mute their microphones when not speaking.
There may be other issues causing your audio issues, so feel free to contact the Help Desk.
