Business Math

Business Math is a dual credit class that can earn a student 4 Business credits from Treasure Valley Community College as well as a VHS credit in Mathematics.  The TVCC course covered in this class is BA 104:  Business Math.  This class applies mathematics to a variety of problems and situations found in the business world, including: mark-ups and mark-downs; statistical analysis; simple interest; present value and future value of single sums and annuities; and gains, losses and valuations of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other investments. Also included are accounting applications of depreciation, inventory valuation, and financial ratio analysis. The website http://www.tvcc.cc/academics/dual_credit.cfm has information about the dual credit program through TVCC.  Students will be required to take the AccuPlacer placement exam and score at a minimum of 246 in Quantitative Reasoning  in order to earn the TVCC credits for the course. 

BUSINESS MATH GRADING POLICY

Your grade is based on daily assignments (done via WebAssign) and tests.  The grades given in this class for Vale High School are based on the standard scale: 

A’s 90% and higher

B’s 80% – 89.99%

C’s 70% – 79.99%

D’s 60% – 69.99%

Failing Anything below 60%

Grades will also be submitted to TVCC which uses a different grading scale. TVCC’s grading scale is:

A 93% – 100%

A- 90% – 92%

B+ 87% – 89%

B 83% – 86%

B- 80% – 82%

C+ 76% – 79%

C 73% – 76%

C- 70% – 73%

D 60% – 69%

Failing Below 60%

HOMEWORK

Homework is an important part of learning in a mathematics classroom and is not assigned merely as busy work.  Homework is assigned almost daily. This course is college level, so you should expect to spend 10-12 hours a week working on assignments.  It is important that you do assignments in a timely manner, so assignments will be submitted online through Web-Assign, and occasionally to the Google Classroom (code: xogldzo7).  You will have until 11:59 pm on the due date of an assignment to turn it in.  Homework will count for 40% of your overall grade, and late assignments will be docked 20% of the points received for the assignment.

TESTS AND FINALS

Generally, there will be an end of chapter test for each chapter covered, though some of the longer chapters will be broken up into smaller units.  Additionally, TVCC requires you to take the final exam for the BA104 course that makes up this class.  The tests and finals will count for 60% of your grade.  Tests will be made up of many types of questions, including multiple choice, true false, definitions, matching, fill-in the blank and free response, and there will be no re-takes of exams allowed.

CELL PHONES & PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Cell phones and personal electronic devices (smart watches, earbuds, tablets, etc.) are NOT allowed in the classroom.   Any cell phones or personal electronic devices visible in the classroom will be taken to the office.

COMPUTERS

The computers and computer network are here for educational purposes, whether you are using a school device at home or in the building.  Any abuse of the system will result in disciplinary action, which can include detention, loss of computer privileges and/or removal from the class.
