In this course, you will be introduced to the fundamentals and characteristics of businesses and acquire the skills required to create, edit, and publish industry appropriate documents. The course will also provide an introduction to computer technology, decision-making, productivity, communications, and problem-solving skills. Students will have the opportunity to gain basic computer skills needed for future education or employment plans in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Word begins with basic keyboarding skill reinforcement progressing to the correct formatting of business documents, reports, references, bibliographies, and title pages, finishing with graphic layout, incorporating Desktop Publishing. For Excel, the students will learn to create spreadsheets and graphs, incorporate formulas, use formatting, and data management. For PowerPoint, students will create slideshows incorporating transitions, timings, images, audio and video, which will then be presented in class. Additionally, students will practice their keyboarding skills daily.
Introduction to Business and Technology Grading Policy (from the Introduction to Business and Technology Syllabus)
The grades given in this class are based on the VHS standard scale:
A’s 90% and higher
B’s 80% – 89.99%
C’s 70% – 79.99%
D’s 60% – 69.99%
Failing Anything below 60%
REMEMBER: YOU earn your grade in this class.
1. In class projects and assignments will make up 80% of your grade each semester. Projects and assignments will be turned in via the Google Classroom. Assignments, activities or projects turned in late will lose 20% of the points earned.
2. You will also have a daily requirement of 10 minutes spent keyboarding on typing.com which counts for 20% of your grade each semester. You will be assigned a specific login for typing.com so that I can keep track of your time spent, your keyboarding speed and your accuracy. It is possible to earn college credit for the keyboarding based on your speed and accuracy.
3. Quizzes (yes, there will be quizzes in some units) may be open or closed notes.
4. Extra credit may be given throughout the quarter.
Introduction to Business and Technology Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Devices Policy
Cell phones and personal electronic devices (smart watches, earbuds, tablets, etc.) are NOT allowed in the classroom. Any cell phones or personal electronic devices visible in the classroom will be taken to the office.
Introduction to Business and Technology Cheating Policy
From the Student Handbook:
“Cheating includes use of prohibited information i.e. answers for individual class work assignments/tests, distribution and possession of information. First Offense: Assign a grade of fail for that particular assignment/test. A conference with the teacher/student/administrator will be held and parents will be notified.”
