In Business Skills & Operations, you are an employee in the Viking Brüi Coffee Shop located right in VHS! Students will be an employee/stakeholder in the business, which is designed to prepare students for gainful employment. As a requirement for working in the coffee shop, students will be required to pass state testing to become a Certified Food handler, and there will be time outside of the regular class time required as part of the class, including before school, during lunch and Part-Fridays. Some of the topics covered in the course include:

You will have daily duties, which include:
• Cleaning the coffee shop.
• Inventorying supplies used and preparing supplies for the shop.
• Designing and testing drinks for monthly specials, then designing posters for the monthly specials.
• Bringing your ideas to the class to improve the operations of the shop!
This class also prepares students to be competitive in technology and business skills. Students will also advance their skills learned in Introduction to Business & Technology, create and/or update resumes and cover letters, learn soft job skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, etc. and refine their job skills by conducting workplace simulations.
Business Operations & Skills Grading Policy (from the Business Operations & Skills Syllabus)
1) The grades given in this class are based on the VHS standard scale:
A’s 90% and higher
B’s 80% – 89.99%
C’s 70% – 79.99%
D’s 60% – 69.99%
Failing Anything below 60%
REMEMBER: YOU earn your grade in this class.
2) In class projects and working in the coffee shop will make up the majority of the points available. All projects will be graded using a grading rubric. Projects will be turned in via the Business Operations & Skills Google Classroom. Late projects will lose 20% of the points for the project.
3) Quizzes (yes there may be a quiz) may be open or closed book/notes.
4) Extra credit may be given throughout the year.
Business Operations & Skills Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Devices Policy
Cell phones and personal electronic devices (smart watches, earbuds, tablets, etc.) are NOT allowed in the classroom. Any cell phones or personal electronic devices visible in the classroom will be taken to the office.
Business Operations & Skills Absence Policy
Attendance and participation in classroom activities are required. Should you be absent, for any reason, it is up to you to get the notes and assignments/projects you missed.
Business Operations & Skills Cheating Policy
From the Student Handbook:
“Cheating includes use of prohibited information i.e. answers for individual class work assignments/tests, distribution and possession of information. First Offense: Assign a grade of fail for that particular assignment/test. A conference with the teacher/student/administrator will be held and parents will be notified.”
