Vintage Inspirations: Highlighting the Art Deco Era

Art Deco emerged as a reaction to the elaborate sensibilities of Art Nouveau. Jewelry became geometric and linear, often featuring bold combinations of metals and stones. Platinum was widely used for its bright white color and durability. Diamonds, onyx, jade and lacquer were also Art Deco staples.
Distinctive carved, faceted and calibrated cuts maximized brilliance. Popular motifs included stylized flowers, animals and symmetry. Themes from ancient Egypt, Mayan civilization and the Machine Age provided inspiration. Everything was very avant-garde and modern.
Art Deco style took off internationally following a heavily publicized 1925 exhibition in Paris. Major jewelers like Cartier, Boucheron and Van Cleef & Arpels unveiled stunning new designs. Abstract shapes, intricate enameling and Egyptian revival looks prevailed.
In the 1930s, Art Deco jewelry became more curvilinear and organic with influences from the natural world creeping back in. But geometric forms and intricate architecture remained at the heart of the style.
