Some district systems contain highly sensitive data, such as payroll, purchasing, budgeting, and personnel records. Because of this, additional security is required when accessing these systems.
If you use Escape, your computer and your district account must use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
This page explains why this is required, how to log in, and what to expect when switching computers.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of protection to your computer.
To sign in, you’ll need:
1️⃣ Your username
2️⃣ Your password
3️⃣ A verification code (from an app or security key)
This ensures that only authorized users can access district systems — even if a password is compromised.
Passwords alone are no longer enough to protect accounts. Even strong passwords can be stolen through phishing emails, fake websites, or data breaches outside of the district.
MFA adds an extra layer of security by ensuring that only you can access your computer and district systems — even if someone else knows your password.
MFA helps prevent:
Unauthorized access to district systems
Compromised accounts due to phishing
Financial and payroll data exposure
Impersonation of staff accounts
Accidental or malicious misuse of sensitive information
This is especially important for systems like Escape, which contain confidential financial and administrative data.
At VUSD we use AuthLite, a security tool used to add Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to Windows computers and sensitive systems.
AuthLite is commonly used by:
School districts
Government agencies
Financial departments
Organizations that handle sensitive data
VUSD uses AuthLite to meet modern security standards and protect financial, payroll, and administrative information.
AuthLite adds a second verification step when signing into Windows.
Instead of just a password, you’ll also verify your identity using:
A temporary code from Google Authenticator, or
A physical security key like a YubiKey
This extra step happens only at login and typically takes just a few seconds.
You’ll see an AuthLite prompt only when signing in
Verification takes just a few seconds
Once logged in, you work normally

Google Authenticator is a free mobile app that generates one-time verification codes used for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
When prompted during sign-in, the app displays a 6-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. Entering this code confirms your identity and completes the login process.
Free and easy to set up
Works on Android and iPhone
No internet connection required once set up
Codes refresh automatically
Widely used and trusted
This is the most common MFA option used by staff across the district.
Turn on your computer
Enter your district username and password
When prompted, open the Google Authenticator app on your phone
Enter the 6-digit code shown in the app (No Spaces)
You’re logged in and ready to work
Codes refresh automatically every 30 seconds.
Enter your district credentials
As you are typing in your password a third box will appear
In this box you need to enter the code found on your Google Authenticator App
A YubiKey is a small physical security device that provides Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) without needing a phone or verification app.
Instead of entering a code, you simply plug the YubiKey into your computer and tap it when prompted. This confirms your identity and completes the login securely.
YubiKeys are not required, but if you’re interested in using one, they are available for purchase through retailers like Amazon. Click Here
Insert your YubiKey into the USB port
Enter your district username and password
When prompted, tap the YubiKey
Login completes automatically
Enter your district username and password
As you are typing in your password a third box will appear
Press the button on your Yubikey and let the code generate in the box.
If you’re a multi-factored user, and you try signing into a computer that does NOT have AuthLite installed, you can still log in using your assigned MFA method. The process is just a little different depending on whether you use Google Authenticator or a YubiKey.
When using Google Authenticator on a non-AuthLite computer, the verification code is entered as part of your username.
At the Windows login screen, click the Username field
Type your username followed by a dash and your 6-digit code
Example: johnd-123456
Press Enter
Enter your password as you normally would
You’ll be signed in successfully
If you use a YubiKey, the process is even simpler.
Plug your YubiKey into the computer’s USB port
Click the Username field
Tap the button on your YubiKey
A code will automatically populate the username field
Press Enter
Enter your password as normal
That’s it — no phone or app required.
Because the Google Authenticator code changes every 30 seconds:
Type your username and password first
Then quickly add - plus the current 6-digit code to your username
Press Enter right away
If the code expires, simply wait for the next one and try again.
These steps only apply to computers without AuthLite installed
On AuthLite-enabled computers, you’ll be prompted automatically
If login fails, double-check the timing of the code and try again
If you’re switching computers frequently, Technology can install AuthLite for a smoother experience
