If a Chromebook screen suddenly appears upside down or rotated to the side, don’t worry — this is a common issue caused by an accidental keyboard shortcut. It can be fixed in just a few seconds.
💬 Pro Tip: Students often trigger accidental screen rotation when holding Ctrl + Shift while tapping keys on the top row — showing them this shortcut can prevent repeated issues.
💬 Pro Tip: Chromebooks with touchscreens are more likely to rotate if the device is held or bumped while unlocked. Enable Auto-Rotate only when needed.
Press and hold the Ctrl key.
While holding Ctrl, press Shift.
While holding both, press the Refresh key (⟳ — the circular arrow on the top row).
Each time you use this shortcut, the screen will rotate 90 degrees.
Keep pressing the combination until the screen is back to normal.
If the shortcut doesn’t rotate the screen:
Make sure you’re holding all three keys at the same time (Ctrl + Shift + Refresh).
Try it a few times — it cycles through rotations.
Restart the Chromebook using Refresh + Power, then try again.
If the screen still won’t rotate, the rotation lock may be on (rare).
